Chef's jackets with studs

Chef's jackets with studs - the colour makes the difference

Ball studs are an unmistakable detail of the classic chef's jacket and combine functionality with tradition. They not only serve as practical fasteners, but also tell a story about hierarchy, craftsmanship and style in the kitchen. This text sheds light on the historical significance of the colours of ball buttons, their advantages today and why they remain indispensable in modern catering operations.

What do the studs on a chef's jacket mean?

‘And what do the colours of the studs in the kitchen actually stand for?’, many people have certainly asked themselves. Today, chef's buttons are available in every imaginable colour and shape and give the chef's jacket that little bit of extra individuality. In the past, however, kitchen staff were by no means as free as they are today when it came to choosing their chef's buttons. Instead, the colours were used to determine fairly precisely who had what rank in the kitchen: #

  • Apprentices traditionally wore white studs
  • After successful completion, the white chef's studs were exchanged for black ones
  • Blue studs were intended for employees in the cold kitchen (garde-manger).
  • Red studs on chef's jackets were a trademark for the Sauciere.
  • Green studs were worn by the side dish cook.

Incidentally, in the 19th century it was not only chefs who wore studs, they were also quite common in everyday life. Nowadays, ball knobs are rarely used to symbolise hierarchy in the kitchen. Nevertheless, they have not lost their raison d'être and are still worn in many kitchens according to personal preference.

6 reasons why you should opt for ball knobs in the kitchen?

1. Protection from burns

The use of ball knobs in the kitchen has a number of practical advantages. Firstly, ball knobs can be opened quickly and easily. This can prevent more serious injuries when handling hot liquids such as splashing or burning fat. Every second counts if your cooking clothes catch fire!

2. Caching stains

Thanks to removable buttons, turning chef's jackets inside out is also a popular trick for making dirt and stains disappear inside. The fact that the jacket is so easy to turn inside out is due to the practical ball buttons. If these were sewn on, turning the jacket inside out would be a lot more problematic.

However, as the cooking buttons can be easily removed from the jacket, they can also be reattached to the jacket the other way round. In the past, this was particularly important when the cook of the house had to appear in front of the master. And even today, who wants to stand in front of customers in dirty work clothes?

3. Easy washing and ironing

Removable buttons are also an advantage when caring for the chef's jacket. This pays off when washing at high temperatures. A chef's jacket without protruding buttons is also easier and cleaner to iron. And the impeccable appearance of a chef's jacket still reflects on the standing of a restaurant or catering business.

4. Expression of timeless elegance

Today, chef's buttons are still particularly popular thanks to their fashion statement. Similar to cufflinks, they add a touch of classic, timeless elegance to an outfit. Chef's jackets with ball studs are a symbol of the long tradition of the chef's trade. They combine modern practicality with a touch of nostalgia.

5. Strengthening the corporate identity

Uniform coloured buttons in the catering trade can also express the corporate identity and strengthen the joint team appearance. You can find more ideas for your catering outfits in our catering workwear category.

6. Individual design options

Chef jackets with ball buttons offer endless possibilities for customisation. From simple, plain-coloured buttons to eye-catching designs with patterns or personalised engravings - every chef can emphasise their own style here.

Does the coloured piping of the chef's jacket have a special meaning?

In contrast to the ball buttons, the colour of the chef's jacket or its piping has no specific symbolic meaning. The traditional chef's jacket was originally white, as white textiles used to be easier to clean. Today, chef's jackets are available in a variety of colours from black to barolo and can be washed easily without fading or losing quality.

The piping - i.e. seams with contrasting colours - also offers the opportunity to customise the chef's jacket. A chef's jacket with piping extends the fashion scope and allows the kitchen team's appearance to be adapted to the style and corporate identity of the catering establishment.

Colour accents through piping can therefore convey a professional, harmonious overall impression and at the same time contribute to brand recognition.
